Knowing Christ and grasping his great love compels us to serve him, but even more, it causes us to love him. We love him because he first loved us (1 John 4:19), and he gives us the ability to love others. Love is to be our chief motivation for serving people. It is to be the sustaining power that enables us to endure the many difficulties of leadership. Our Lord says the “great and first commandment” is to love God with the totality of our being—“with all your heart
